Cutting Data Calculator: milling, drilling and turning

Calculate spindle speed, cutting speed, feed, material removal rate and theoretical machining time. Free, no registration, entirely in your browser.

Material group (record only) / Tool (record only)

Selections record the application; they do not set cutting data. Exact material grade, condition and tool data are still required.

1 · Operation and speed
Milling: effective cutting diameter. Turning: outside diameter before this cut. Threading: nominal diameter.
Use the specific tool manufacturer data for the material and application. No automatic recommendation.
Check against tool, holder and machine limits before use.
2 · Feed
Effective teeth per revolution for milling, not only teeth simultaneously engaged.
Not actual chip thickness: engagement and geometry also influence it.
Feed distance per spindle revolution.
Relative tool/workpiece movement, not rapid traverse.
Single start: lead equals pitch. Multiple starts: lead equals pitch × start count.
3 · Volume and machining time (optional)
Axial in milling; radial in external turning. Optional for speed/feed alone.
Radial in milling, no greater than D. No chip-thinning correction included.
Use a justified target when solving for ap or ae.
Only needed for reaming removal rate; must be smaller than D.
Actual travel including your approach/overtravel. No automatic allowances.
Same length and feed for each pass. Blank = 1.
4 · Machine and power (optional)
Enter only with reliable data for the material and chip conditions; not a universal material constant.
Use the lowest permitted spindle, tool and workholding limit.
Optional application limit. Results are not automatically capped.
Power available at the edge at this speed, not an unchecked motor nameplate rating.

Operation scope

Milling: linear engagement with known effective diameter. Turning: external longitudinal cut at fixed n and D; volume from removed annular area. Drilling: solid material; reaming: differential area using D₀. Threads: synchronised feed from lead; no volume or power calculation. Thread milling and constant-surface-speed facing are not included.

Worked calculation examples

Example inputs are for checking calculations only, not machining recommendations.

  • Milling: D = 10 mm; n = 3000 min⁻¹; z = 4; fz = 0.05 mm; ap = 2 mm; ae = 5 mm → Vc ≈ 94.248 m/min; Vf = 600 mm/min; Q = 6 cm³/min. L = 120 mm → t = 0.2 min = 12 s.
  • Drilling into solid: D = 10 mm; n = 1000 min⁻¹; f = 0.1 mm/rev → Vf = 100 mm/min; Q ≈ 7.854 cm³/min.
  • External longitudinal turning: D = 50 mm; n = 1000 min⁻¹; f = 0.2 mm/rev; ap = 1 mm → Vf = 200 mm/min; Q ≈ 30.788 cm³/min.
  • Cut tapping: n = 500 min⁻¹; l = 1.25 mm/rev → Vf = 625 mm/min. L = 20 mm → t = 1.92 s; 2t = 3.84 s.
